Largest Employing Industries

The largest employing industry across north eastern Melbourne and north western Melbourne is Health Care and Social Assistance, employing a total of 99,800 people as of February 2021. In the five years to May 2024 it is projected that employment would have grown by 19,900 people. The largest number of people employed in this industry are: Registered Nurses; Aged and Diabled Carers; Child Carers; Nursing Support and Personal Care Workers; and Receptionists.

The second largest employing industry across north eastern Melbourne and north western Melbourne is Construction with 85,300 employees as at February 2021. Employment in construction jobs is expected to grow by 8,500 in the five years to May 2024. The largest number of employing occupations are: Carpenters and Joiners; Electricians; Construction Managers; Plumbers; and Building and Plumbing Labourers.

The third largest employing industry is retail with 78,400 employees as of February 2021. Employment is expected to continue to grow modestly, adding 2,900 jobs in the five years to May 2024. The top employing occupations are: General Sales Assistants; Retail Managers; Checkout Operators and Office Cashiers; Shelf Fillers; and Pharmacy Sales Assiostants.

The fourth largest employing industry across the geographic area is Education and Training, employing 67,100 people as of February 2021. In the five years to May 2024 employment is expected to grow by 10,400 people. Largest employing occupations in this industry are: Primary School Teachers; Secondary School Teachers; Education Aides; University Lecturers and Tutors; and Private Tutors and Teachers.

The fifth largest employing industry is Manufacturing, employing 66,900 people as of February 2021. However, only a marginal increase of 100 employees is expected in the five years to May 2024. The top employing occupations in this industry are: Structural Steel and Welding Trade Workers; Production Managers; Metal Fitters and Machinists; Packers; and Food and Drink Factory Workers.

The sixth largest employing industry is Professional, Scientific and Technical, employing 61,600 people as of February 2021. Growth in this industry is expected to be strong, increasing by 14,000 employees in the five years to May 2024. Top employing occupations in this industry are: Accountants; Software and Applications Programmers; Solicitors; Management and Organisation Analysts; and Advertising, Public Relations and Sales Managers.

The seventh largest employing industry is Transport, Postal and Warehousing, employing 42,600 people as of February 2021. Growth is modest with an increase of 2100 employees expected for the five years to May 2024. Top employing occupations are: Truck Drivers; Automobile Drivers; Courier and Postal Deliverers; Storepersons; and Bus and Coach Drivers.

The eighth largest employing industry is Accommodation and Food Services, employing 35,700 people as of February 2021. Growth in the five years to May 2024 is expected to be modest with an increase of 1,600 employees. Top employing occupations in this indusrty are: Waiters; Kitchenhands; Bar Attendants and Baristas; Chefs; and General Sales Assistants.
